French Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyonnais showed their true colors by releasing a new fourth kit this weekend.
The club debuted the new shirts in a Ligue 1 game against Olympique de Marseille on Sunday May 1. The jerseys are mainly royal blue, with gradient red stripes in halftones composed of parallelograms on the front. There are diagonal red panels under the arms, gold trim around the blue v-neck and gold Adidas stripes on the shoulders. Sponsor logos on the chest, sleeve, upper back and lower back are all printed in gold.
The promotional material for the launch of the kit (see below) included the slogan: “Red and blue are our colors, Lyonnais is our heart” (“Red and blue are our colors, Lyon is our heart”). Some of the product launch photos showed this slogan printed on the lower right front of the jersey, near the hem, but it did not appear on the jerseys worn during Sunday’s game. The colors red, blue and gold are taken from the coat of arms of the city of Lyon.
The back of the kit is mostly solid blue to allow legibility of the names and numbers, although small parts of the halftone pattern are visible near the hem.
The shorts are solid blue, with gold Adidas stripes on each side and a large red panel on the back of each leg. In-game sponsor logo Teddy Smitha clothing mark, appeared on the left leg.
The socks are blue with red cuffs. Gold Adidas stripes are included in the armband and a gold Adidas logo appears on the front.
The new kits have worked well for Lyon, who beat Marseille 3-0 on Sunday. The victory lifted them to 7th place in Ligue 1, keeping a place in European competition close at hand with three games to go.
The jerseys are marked “22-23” in Olympique Lyonnais Online Storemeaning they will likely be reused in some way next season.
