Harris named SEC Defensive Player of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – South Carolina center-back Jyllissa harris was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week as announced by the conference on Monday, September 27. The Hazlet, New Jersey senior won her third career SEC Player of the Week title and second defensive honor.

Harris played all 90 minutes in wins over Vanderbilt and Kentucky, anchoring a baseline that allowed just four shots on goal for the week. She also scored her third goal of the season in the win over Kentucky. Harris’ goal opened the scoring for the Gamecocks in their 2-1 win with a header from a corner kick from Lauren Chang.

She and the Gamecock defense did not allow a goal during the game, with the only goal of the week conceded from a penalty against Great Britain. Harris and the Gamecocks limited Vanderbilt (1) and Kentucky (3) to their lowest number of shots on goal of the season. It was Vanderbilt’s fewest shots on goal in nearly two years. Harris and the defense also held Vanderbilt without a first-half shot attempt and only two on the night, also a season low. It was the fewest attempts by Vandy to shoot in a match since 2018.

Harris and the Gamecocks return to action on Friday, Oct. 1, when they host 11th-seeded Auburn at 7 p.m. inside Stone Stadium.
