AP pre-season poll for college girls’ basketball: UCLA places top 25 for third year in a row

With reinforcements settling in Westwood, people are starting to notice the Bruins’ place on the national stage.

UCLA women’s basketball took 20th place in the pre-season edition of the AP poll on Tuesday. The Bruins had 175 points, placing comfortably in the top 25 by more than 100 points.

This is the third straight season UCLA has entered the AP top 25 campaign, now making it five times in six years. The Bruins have also reached at least the Sweet 16 in four of the last five NCAA tournaments.

UCLA were No.9 in the preseason around the same time last year, although they were unable to maintain their Sweet 16 streak at the end of the year, falling in sixteenths from final. Forward Michaela Onyenwere may have left for the WNBA, but a handful of new transfers, seasoned veterans and returning strikeouts make up what coach Cori Close has called his most talented squad since moving to Westwood ago. ten years.

Around the Pac-12, reigning NCAA champion Stanford took third place, while Oregon was the second-highest ranked team at No.10 with 479 points. Oregon State and Arizona ranked 14th and 22nd, respectively.

While the Pac-12 was tied for the top 25 reps with five, it was a fairly well-distributed opening for the polls. The Big Ten and ACC each had five teams as well, and the SEC and Big 12 each had four.

Washington State was the only other Pac-12 team to receive a vote, and their nine points place them 33rd.

Despite ranking fourth among Pac-12 teams according to the AP, the Coaching Poll on Pac-12 Women’s Basketball Media Day on Oct. 12 placed UCLA in third place. The conference title will be hotly contested this year, as usual, as the Pac-12 took center stage nationally last March when Stanford and Arizona faced off in the national championship.

Two non-conference ranked opponents also await the Bruins, first with No.2 UConn on Dec. 11 and then with No.17 at Ohio State a week later on Dec. 19. The game against the Huskies will be played at a neutral venue in Newark, New Jersey, but the game with the Buckeyes will begin at the Pauley Pavilion for the first non-conference home game of the season.
